The interactions I observed between these two women are examples of non-verbal communication. According to Adler, Rosenfeld, and Proctor (2013), non-verbal communication entails â€Å"messages expressed by nonlinguistic means† and is an important aspect of communication because â€Å"what we do often conveys more meaning than what we say. (p. 177). Non-verbal Functions Non-Verbal communication serves several purposes in our interactions with others and has an important role in how we make and maintain connections with those we encounter (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor, 2013). While watching the interaction between these two women, I observed managing identity, creating/maintaining relationships, and regulating interaction, which are described by Adler, Rosenfeld, and Proctor (2013) as functions of non-verbal communication. Managing identity is a way of expressing ourselves without necessarily saying anything and is accomplished by our movements and the way we visually present ourselves to others (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor, 2013). In the case of the two women I observed today, both women were garbed in black from head to toe. The attire of these two women sends a message about who they are and what they like. The woman may like the color black or like how the color looks on them. Maybe black is a reflection of their mood that day.
